Hanging a door is easier than you may think, but it’s obviously crucial to get it right, it can’t be hanging off! This three step guide should help!

Step one:

First of all you need to choose a door. In order to get the right size, you will need to measure either the door frame or the existing door. Most houses will have standard sized door frames (6’6 x 2’6”) but its best to check beforehand.

Step two:

Right, once you get your new door remove the protective strips of timber along the bottom and top edges. Hold the door up against the frame, if your lucky the door will fit straight away! If not, don’t worry, get somebody to help you hold the door in position and mark off where you need to trim it.

Step three:

Now on to hanging the door, get somebody to help you with this. Hold the door and move the position of the hinges to the new door. . Mark the top and bottom of the hinge recesses onto to the door. Hold the hinge onto the door and mark around it with a pencil.

Mark the thickness of one hinge flap onto the face of the door. Use a sharp 19mm chisel and a mallet and mark around the mark you made for the hinge recess to the depth needed. Now, make lots of cuts across the hinge recess and pare away the excess wood one bit at a time. Once this is done, place the hinge into it and secure it to the door with screws.

With the door held in place, in an open position, screw the hinges onto the door frame, using only one screw for each hinge. Check that the door opens and closes easily before adding the final screws. Just add the door handle and it’s complete!
